The Getting Started Wizard has been designed to give you a basic introduction to the features of your web hosting plan and the cPanel control panel. You will be taught how to configure some of the more basic options of your website so that you can develop your web hosting plan to be fit and ready for your website.
With the professional range of video tutorials available with this option, you can follow step-by-step guides that will instruct you on how to complete some of the more complex tasks that you may associate with your web hosting account. These videos will allow beginners to create MySQL databases, subdomains and set the correct permissions on the files hosted in their web space.
It is important for you to update your contact information and password on a regular basis to keep your web hosting account secure. cPanel includes a password generator that can create a password for you, depending on the strength required. Keeping your contact information updated is a necessity because this will allow cPanel to automatically email you if there are issues with your web hosting account.
These options will allow you to customize cPanel by changing the way the control panel looks and the language that you are using it in if English isn't your mother tongue. Creating shortcuts will provide you with a shorter route to accessing the features that you use most often.
cPanel offers a library of CGI (Common Gateway Interface) scripts that can be used to add functionality to your website. Useful scripts available include a countdown clock, visitor counter, banner advertisement management and a guestbook.
cPanel's Site Software offers many additional items of software that can be installed in your web space to provide you with a number of extra functions that you can use with your website.
If you are going to be developing websites for hosting under your cPanel account using the Perl language, you will need to install additional modules directly from the CPAN repository so that you are able to use these specific features within your web applications.
PHP PEAR Modules
PEAR packages provide additional functionality for web developers to use in their PHP web applications. In order to use a certain function or package as part of your development process, you will first need to install it from the PEAR package repository.
The PHP configuration of the hosting server can sometimes impact on the functionality of your web applications because there may be particular modules or functions that aren't available for security reasons. With this option you can view the configuration of PHP on the server that you are hosted on so that you are able to identify what you have available to use when developing a web application.
This option will allow you to optimize how Apache processes certain requests and therefore allows you to reduce the overall resource footprint of your web hosting account. A majority of the optimization is achieved by compressing content before it is delivered to your visitors.
Softaculous is a third-party feature that we provide with all of our cPanel shared hosting plans and offers a library of open source applications that can be installed in your web space with just a few clicks. Many web applications can be rather complex to setup and configure properly and so Softaculous has been designed to simplify this process whilst also allowing first-time users access to one of the largest collections of web applications available.
Host.co.in recommends that on top of the regular backups that we make of our servers, that you take your own backups of your web hosting accounts for additional data security. cPanel provides a feature that will allow you to download a zip file of either your entire website or an individual part of your web hosting account (such as your home directory, databases, email forwarders and email filters configurations). Although these aren't automatic, automatic backups are available for our cPanel shared accounts as an add-on. The Backup Wizard performs the same actions as the Backup option, with the added option of restoring your web hosting account from a previously taken backup.
The File Manager allows you to manage the contents of your web hosting account through a web browser than other methods such as FTP. Certain functions both basic and advanced can be performed using the File Manager application, such as uploading files to your web space, deleting and editing existing files as well as setting the required permissions on the file and folder structure of your web hosting account. The Legacy version is available for users for familiar with the older interface.
Web Disk offers an interface that will allow you to manage and manipulate the files hosted under your web hosting account using your operating system, reducing the need for FTP clients or other file transfer agents. This is an ideal solution for beginners because it will offer them a way of managing their web hosting account's file structure using an interface that they are already familiar with. Files can be created, edited, deleted and moved between your computer and web space using the Web Disk application.
FTP accounts are necessary to allow for the transfer of data between your local computer and web hosting account using an FTP client. You can create multiple FTP accounts for your website so that you can allow more than a single person to manage the content of your website; individual accounts can be assigned to specific folders in your web space if one person is responsible for a single section. FTP Session Control allows you to view which FTP accounts are currently logged in to your web space with the option of terminating a session if necessary.
Using this feature you can view detailed information about the last 300 visitors to your website, providing you with an opportunity to learn about those who are repeatedly visiting your website so that you can tailor your content to fit their interests. Information available through this feature includes a visitor's IP address, operating system and the web browser that they are using.
Monitoring your bandwidth should be part of your web hosting account maintenance because if you run out of bandwidth then your visitors won't be able to access your website. Through this feature you can monitor your website's traffic usage to identify the times at which bandwidth usage is at its heaviest; you should use the information provided here to decide whether you should purchase more bandwidth for your cPanel hosting account.
These are three applications that you can use to analyze the visitor logs that are collected for your website. Awstats and Webalizer provide similar functionality by supplying your with visitor statistics including the number of visitors that have accessed your website in a given period as well as the locations from which these visitors originate. Awstats can also provide information on error codes that have occurred across your website so that you can take the action necessary to rectify these issues. If necessary, Webalizer FTP can be used to monitor the FTP usage statistics for your web hosting account.
This option allows you to view the visitor logs for your website in their raw format so that you are able to view the information that is used by statistics applications without any fancy graphs. You are able to download a Zip file containing this information if you wish to analyze it more closely.
This option will provide you with a more simplified breakdown of everyone that has visited your website each month. Although the content offered is very limited, you can still identify where a majority of your visitors originate.
Broken links and missing files can often be a problem for large websites. The Error Log feature will give you a summary of the last 300 errors that have been encountered on your website so that you can identify these and fix these to improve the end-user experience.
As cPanel provides you with several different log programs to choose from, you can use this option to specify the ones that you would like utilize.
This function will list the resources that processes related to your web hosting account are using. The statistics are updated every 5 minutes so that you can rely on this information to see which processes are the biggest resource consumers.
This option allows you to manage how Apache handles specific file types; the web server software already comes configured to handle extensions such as .cgi, .pl, .plx, amongst others, but you may wish to add a new handler for security purposes. For example, if you were to use the file extension '.example' with your web scripts and these scripts were in fact CGI scripts, you will want to enter the handler as 'cgi-script' and the file extension as '.example' when setting this up.
As well as viewing the images under your web hosting account, the Image Manager will also enable you to carry out basic modifications of these images such as resizing them.
This allows you to configure how a directory with no index page will be displayed when accessed through a web browser. You can choose to deny view access, or alternatively there are different index styles for you to use.
Error pages are displayed to your visitors when an error occurs with your website whilst they are visiting it. Each possible issue with a website has its own error code, for example if someone tries to access a page under your website that doesn't exist then the code for this is 404; a user trying to access a password protected area of your website without the relevant permissions will be faced with a 401 error. The Apache web server provides basic error pages, but using this option you can create your own error pages that will be displayed to visitors. Using custom error pages can portray a more professional image to your visitors.
Cron jobs are scripts that are scheduled to run at specific times throughout the day. Scripts that have been designed for this purpose can be developed using any language, so long as it is supported by your web hosting plan and you are able to use the correct command to execute the script properly when it's scheduled run time comes up. Cron jobs can be used for a number of different purposes, such as sending out emails to your customers at a specific time of day or for day-to-day housekeeping activities of web applications.
This section provides you with a number of different tools that you can utilize to find out information about a particular domain name or server. You can also trace the route to the server that your website is hosted on from your local computer.
cPanel provides a virus scanner for your web hosting account, which is powered by the ClamAV application.
MIME types tell a visitor's web browser how to interpret a particular file type so that the browser can take the actions required to handle the file properly; for example, the MIME type 'text/html' applies to files that end with the extensions .html, .htm and .shtmls – this MIME type will tell a visitor's web browser to render the file as a web page. MIME types can be added to your web hosting account as new technologies arise so that your website is always using the latest developments.
As part of the process of setting up your web hosting account, the likelihood is that you will want to create email accounts that you can use in conjunction with the domain name that you have purchased. Using this option you will be able to create the email accounts necessary to you or your business, as well as manage existing ones so that passwords and other information can be reset if necessary.
Although your email accounts will always be accessible through IMAP or POP3, you may wish to use webmail services because these can be accessed through a web browser from any location by navigating to yourdomain.com/webmail. cPanel provides you with access to the following three webmail clients:
This is the spam email filter that is supplied by cPanel and is used by us to filter out the emails that you don't want to particularly see in your email inbox. It is available as an option in cPanel so that you can apply your own particular spam email rules to individual mailboxes.
Auto-responders can be setup for standard inboxes and automatically send out a pre-defined email to senders every time a particular inbox receives an email – this can be handy for when yourself or others with email accounts under your web hosting account are out of the office for a sustained period of time or unable to check email periodically for other reasons.
A mailing list is designed to simplify the process of sending emails to a large group of people. Quite often you may find yourself having t send updates or a newsletter to many users and typing out the email address of every recipient every time you need to do this can be time consuming, which is where a mailing list will be handy because you will only need to enter their addresses once. Additional options can be configured once the list has been created.
Account level filters are used to process all incoming mail on your web hosting account; user level filters are individual to certain email accounts and are therefore applied after account level filters.
Tracing an email will allow you to discover whether an email sent from your web hosting account has been delivered successfully or not; you can also review the number of attempts that have been made to deliver a particular message. Furthermore, you can also trace the route that an email sent from your web hosting account will take to reach a remote email address.
Using either an Excel spreadsheet (.xls/.xlsx) or a comma separated values sheet (.csv), you are able to import lists of email addresses and then cPanel will automatically create these addresses based on the settings that you have specified in the file.
cPanel operates around two core technologies that will ensure that emails sent from your domain name/web hosting account can be verified to reduce the chances of the messages being sent to directly to the recipient's spam folder. Email authentication is one of the key methods that can be used to fight spam because the nature of incoming and outgoing messages can be detected automatically.
MX stands for Mail Exchanger and is one of the core DNS entries that you will find in your domain name's DNS file; it specifies the server that is responsible for handling emails sent to your domain name. You can have multiple MX entries for your domain name, each of which will have a priority assigned to it. 0 is the highest priority that can be assigned to an MX record, therefore placing this as the primary mail server. Additional mail servers can be used for backup purposes, with a priority greater than 0 (i.e. 20) being assigned. MX entries that share the same priority will have emails distributed between them randomly.
Subdomains can be used to develop different section for your website as they use a prefix of your original domain name to form the address; an example of a subdomain would be 'subdomain.host.co.in', with host.co.in being the main domain name. The cPanel file structure dictates that each subdomain will call its files from a folder of the same name in your main web folder.
Addon domains are designed to map standard domain names (i.e. host.co.in), other than the domain name that is assigned as the main one to your web hosting account, to subdomains hosted under your web hosting account. This feature enables you to host multiple domain names with a single web hosting account so that you can fully utilize the resources available to you.
Pointing/parking allows you to attach additional domain names to your existing web hosting account, but not necessarily to host individual websites for these domains. When an end-user enters a parked domain's URL into their web browser they will see the website for your main domain name.
With a redirect you can setup one page to automatically redirect to another page. This will be beneficial when you are restructuring your website and need to redirect users who may directly access old pages to their new equivalent.
A DNS zone file is what forms the basis of any domain name because it translates the human-readable domain name (i.e. host.co.in) into the IP address (i.e. 123.456.789.012) of the server that is hosting your website; unlike humans, servers communicate through the means of IP addresses as opposed to domain names. The Simple DNS Zone Editor of cPanel only allows you to create A and CNAME records for your domain name's zone file, whereas the Advanced DNS Zone Editor can be used to create records of all types.
If you wish to create a section for your website that can only be accessed by certain people then this can be achieved by password protecting a directory and creating user accounts for individual users. By doing this, when a user requests a certain directory under your website, their web browser will prompt them to enter a username and password in order to view the protected directory.
Adding IP addresses here will allow you to block offending users from accessing your website. Domain names can also be entered here, as these can then be resolved to the originating IP address.
Using this feature you can generate SSL certificates, signing requests and keys, all of which are key to using SSL as a method of protection for your website and visitors. SSL certificates are used to encrypt information that is passed between visitors and your websites as to provide an extra level of protection where visitors may be entering their personal details.
If a user of a password protect portion of your website gives out their password against the webmaster's will, Leech Protect can be used to identify and redirect any accounts that have been compromised.
This is an encryption that uses the standard private/public key approach to encrypt messages. GnuPG messages are encrypted using a public key, but the message can only be decrypted using a private key, which is deigned to be held by the intended recipient of the message only.
As part of any dynamic website that is hosted on a Linux server, a MySQL database is going to be the database backend powering the content and configuration used by the web application. Using this option you can create and manage your MySQL databases through cPanel, along with database users and permissions for the assurance that your databases will work with your web applications. The MySQL Database Wizard may be a more suitable option for beginners as it will provide them with a step-by-step process by which they can create databases and MySQL users.
This is the web-based database administration that provides full MySQL database management facilities through a web-based interface. Whereas cPanel allows you to create and manage the actual databases, PHPMyAdmin controls the structure of the database so that you can create and modify individual tables and columns as well as insert data manually.
Sometimes external servers may require access to your MySQL databases. If this is something that you see as necessary then you can use this option to specify the servers that you wish to access your databases.
