Server Configuration

When using WHM for the firs time, you should take advantage of this function to aid you with the setup and configuration of your reseller web hosting account so that you can configure each individual option as you wish.

This function will need to be set because it will inform your customers of how they are going to contact you for support; cPanel/WHM does have a built-in support mechanism that you can use if you wish to.

This is the language management feature of cPanel and WHM and allows you to set the language that your clients use when accessing the cPanel control panel. This can be an incredibly useful feature if the first language of yourself or your clients isn't English.

Cluster/Remote Access

You can setup multiple servers to share the DNS information on your reseller account to reduce any single points of failure that could exist in your DNS infrastructure.

Account Information

This will allow you to manage the client accounts that are hosted under your WHM reseller account. From here you will be able to view the cPanel hosting accounts that are assigned to your reseller account; you can also review the resource usage of individual cPanel accounts. Lists of parked domains and subdomains that have been added by your clients are also available.

Account Functions

From the Account Functions screen you will be able to add, modify and delete the cPanel hosting accounts that are assigned to your WHM reseller hosting account. You can also perform actions on existing web hosting accounts including forcing a password change, limiting bandwidth usage and upgrading/downgrading the specifications of a particular user.

In terms of WHM and cPanel, a theme is the frame on which a style (otherwise known as a skin) is overlaid. Currently WHM doesn't support the use of custom themes.

As a reseller you will have some level of control on how cPanel functions for your own clients. Using this option you will be able to view the Change Log and introduce custom branding to an extent.

You can install additional plugins in WHM to expand the functionality of the cPanel/WHM suite. Popular plugins for use with cPanel include the Softaculous script installation application and Attracta SEO tools.

Backups & Backup Wizard

Backing up your website on a regular basis is one of the most important maintenance tasks that you should take on board as the user of a web hosting account. Even though has a strong backup infrastructure through which we take backups of our cPanel servers on a regular basis, taking your own backups is always recommended practice because it can give you that extra assurance regarding the safety and security of the contents of your web hosting account. cPanel makes taking backups an easy process for your clients through the Backup Wizard that is supplied as part of the control panel.

File Manager & Legacy File Manager

The File Manager is available for when you aren't able to access your web space using FTP. Often you will want to upload files and make modifications to files that are already part of your website whilst on the move and the File Manager has been designed to provide this functionality through a web browser so that your clients can access their web space from any location. Some dynamic scripts will require a specific set of permissions to be set on other files and folders within a website's infrastructure in order to function properly; File Manager includes the features that will allow you to achieve this in a simple manner. If your customers have been use to using an older version of cPanel then the Legacy File Manager is offered to provide them with a familar interface.

Web Disk

Web Disk is a new feature to cPanel and allows Windows desktop users to connect to their web hosting account using an application for their desktop computer, mounting the files and folders in their web space as local entities on their machine. Through using Web Disk you are able to remove the need for FTP access to your cPanel web hosting account as Web Disk can provide a more secure connection that will also improve upon functionality.

Disk Space Usage

As the amount of disk space assigned to a web hosting account can deminish relatively quickly with the amount of multimedia content that forms most websites, it is important to keep a keen eye on how your disk space is being used so that you can identify areas in which savings can be made. The Disk Space Usage feature of cPanel will provide a summary of how much disk space each feature of the control panel is being used so that if there is a feature wasting disk space, you can take measures to free up some more space.

FTP Accounts & Session Control

FTP accounts are required if you are going to be uploading your website using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). You can create an unlimited number of FTP accounts under a reseller hosting package, a feature that will be useful for organizations with a large number of employees that need access to the corporate web space. With an FTP account in cPanel you are able to limit access to a particular directory so that you can put particular people in charge of particular sections of your website. The access that some FTP accounts can also be limited to either Read or Write, depending on what the account holder's role is. The FTP Session Control feature will allow you to see which FTP accounts are currently connected to your web space and will allow you to terminate any questionable connections.

Apache Handlers

By default Apache has been setup to handle specific file extensions that are the defaults of any scripting languages that are installed on a server, for example .php, .cgi and .pl. Using the Apache Handlers option you can choose to allow Apache to handle new file extensions, even though you may not be installing any new languages in the hosting environment. For example, you may wish to rename your PHP files to the extension '.example'; you will be able to configure these files to be run as PHP files with the Apache Handlers option by setting the specified file extension to work with the same handler option as standard PHP files.

Image Manager

The Image Manager provides you with the facility to view all of the images that are hosted under your web hosting account. As this media can be one of the biggest consumers of disk space, it is a good idea to be aware of where images are being used so that you can remove any unneeded ones to free up disk space if necessary. There are also image editing tools available here so that you can crop and resize them.

Index Manager

When a visitor attempts to access a directory in your website that doesn't contain an index page, they will usually be shown a list of the directory's contents. Using this option you can choose to either deny visitors the ability to view these listings or choose a particular style to be applied to the page.

Error Pages

Every potential error that could occur with your website will have a specific error code assigned to it and when these errors occur, a page will be shown to your visitors to let them know that an error has occurred and the code will be provided. For example, if a visitor attempts to access a page under your website that doesn't exist then they will generate a 404 error as this is the code assigned here; a web page will then be displayed informing the user of the error and error code. The Error Features of cPanel provides a facility that can be used to display custom error pages that are more user-friendly and in-keeping with the design of a website.

Cron Jobs

Some web applications will have particular jobs that need to be completed at a set time every day to ensure that the application is able to fulfill its purpose. These jobs are known as cron jobs and are triggered by scripts that have to be setup to run when required; cPanel allows you to setup as many cron jobs as required and you can specify the precise times at which you would like to see these jobs run. You will need to specify the full path to the script in question so that the correct tasks are completed. An example of what a cron job may be used for could include the generation and emailing of invoices to customers at midnight every day so that clients are able to pay their bills on time.

Network Tools

Using the cPanel Network Tools, you can discover additional information about any domain name or server.

Virus Scanner

The Virus Scanner is powered by ClamAV and can be used to keep your web hosting account clear of any malicious bugs.

MIME Types

MIME types tell the web browser that a visitor is using how to render a particular file. If we take the MIME type 'text/html' as an example, then where this is used the web browser will interpret it as a web page and so will render any pages or scripts using this as a standard HTML web page because this is the output that has been generated. New MIME types can be added to cPanel web hosting accounts as necessary so that if you are using any obscure file types on your website then you can ensure that your web hosting account and visitors' computers are able to handle these.

Latest Visitors

Information about the people who are visting your website(s) can be used as part of an SEO campaign or something similar because you will be able to identify your key audiences and where they originate so that you can perform a more targeted campaign. Using this feature you can view detailed information about the past 300 visitors to pass through your website including their IP address and location. The OS and web browser that they are using is also supplied and you can use this to enhance the features and methods that you use to develop your website.

You should stress to your cPanel hosting clients the importance of monitoring their bandwidth usage because their websites could be inaccessible if they run out of bandwidth as this is a measure of the amount of data transferred between a web hosting account and client computers. Rather than predicting, your customers can use this tool to inform them of when they should be purchasing more bandwidth for their cPanel hosting account.

AWStats, Webalizer & Webalizer FTP

Whilst the Latest Visitors feature of cPanel can provide a very basic set of statistics about the past 300 people to visit your website, you also have a choice between AWStats and Webalizer if you wish to view a more complete set of visitor statistics for your website and in a manner that is much easier to read. Both AWStats and Webalizer use graphs to display the data that has been collected so that it is much easier for you to analyze; a greater set of statistics is also taken so that you can view the historical log data for your visitors. Webalizer FTP is a separate application and provides a similar interface to the normal Webalizer application, the only difference being that the data offered here is related to your FTP accounts and connections.

Raw Access Logs

The statistics applications used by cPanel retrieve their data from the raw access logs that are collected by the web server. Using this option you will be able to view your visitor statistics in their original format. Although this may not appear to be of any use, you can download these statistics files so that they can be used in conjunction with your own applications.

Analog Stats

If you are looking for a more simplified view of your statistics, then Analog Stats will provide you with a very basic presentation of the information used by the other statistics applications. Even though the content offered is relatively uninformative, you can still identify things such as where your visitors originate.

Error Logs

Every time an error occurs on your website, a log of this will be made by the Apache web server. Each error has its own code, for example a page not found error is always assigned the code '404'. Using the error logs you will be able to identify areas of your website where your visitors are facing issues and it will probably be in your best interests to rectify these errors as soon as possible; for example, a 404 error could be generated by a visitor following a link from one of your pages to another section of the website that doesn't exist and you can rectify this by simply changing the link to point to the correct location.

Choose Log Programs

As cPanel utilizes different log programs, you can use this option to set the ones that you would prefer to use.

Resource Usage

Aside from disk space usage, a cPanel web hosting account will also be making use of other server resources. Using the Resource Usage feature you will be able to see the processes running that are related to your web hosting account so that you can identify which processors are the biggest resource users.

This will allow you to manage and configure how your reseller hosting account handles email. You will be able to view Relayers, a summary of emails that have been sent through your account and Mail Delivery Reports.

Spam & Email Authentication

SpamAssassin is offered with all cPanel reseller accounts so that you are able to provide your own web hosting clients with a tried and tested spam prevention application. DKIM (Domain Keys Identified Mail) and SPF (Sender Policy Framework) are two features available to authenticate email that is sent to and from domain names hosted under your reseller account; it can aid in ensuring that a domain name is not abused or used for spamming purposes without the owners knowledge.

Webmail is a common feature of any web hosting plan because it is important for many businesses that their employees have access to their email accounts from any location where the internet is available. With a cPanel reseller account, you will find three webmail applications available for your clients' use: Horde, Squirrel Mail and Roundcube.

Forwarders & Auto Responders

Forwarders are dummy email accounts that are setup to act as an address to which email can be sent, but any mail received at these addresses is automatically forwarded onto a pre-defined physical mailbox.

User-level Filtering & Account-level Filtering

As a cPanel reseller customer, your customers will have access to filtering rules that can be applied to either individual email accounts or can cover the scope of their entire web hosting account. This can be helpful when you are trying to stop email addresses from a particular domain name contacting any of the email addresses hosted under an email address on your web hosting account, or where you may wish to send emails from a particular customer to a certain folder.

Mailing Lists

If you are constantly emailing a large group of email then entering each individual email address into the 'To' field can be a timely procedure every time you wish to send a new message. Using the Mailing Lists of cPanel, your customers will be able to place all of the email addresses that would otherwise be clogging up the 'To' field in one place so that when they come to send a new message to this group of people, they only need to choose the list and then enter the message that they wish to convey, thereby saving quite a lot of time every time a new email needs to be sent.

Subdomains can be used to creation individual addresses for different areas of your website. If we were to take '' as an example of a subdomain, the part that you would be able to specify is 'test' whilst the remainder of the address will be formed of the domain name that you are already using. By creating individual sections for your website you are going to make it easier for your visitors to access popular parts of your website without having to go to the homepage and follow links.

Addon Domains

The Addon Domains feature of cPanel provides you with the facility to take actual domains (i.e. and map these to any subdomains that you have hosted under your web hosting account. Of course the domains that you are adding on to your web hosting account will need to be separate to the domain name that is already specified as your main domain name. This can be beneficial for situations where your customers want to host more than one website under their cPanel web hosting account.

Parked Domains

Parked/pointed domains can be attached to your web hosting account to serve the content that is shown on your main website as you can't host individual websites for these domains, even under their own subdomains. When an end-user enters the address of a parked domain into their web browser, they will be shown the same as what is available under your main domain.

With redirects you can change the location that a user is sent to when they attempt to access a particular page on your website. This is one of the most helpful features available when restructuring your website because it will remove the chances of any broken links or 404 errors being generated when users attempt access deleted pages.

DNS Zone Editor

Your clients may wish to change the DNS settings for their website at some point if they are going to be using third-party services, for example Google Apps for their email services. The Simple DNS Zone Editor and Advanced DNS Zone Editor will allow them to take full control of their domain name settings. As a reseller you can also control these settings through WHM.

Password Protected Directories

There many be circumstances where there are confidential files that you wish to share through your website and you only wish for a select group of people to have access to these files. cPanel comes with a feature that you can use to password protect particular directories under your domain so that only those who have a username and password are able to view the contents of these directories.

IP Deny Manager

If there are a specific group of computers that are trying to attack your website on a regular basis then you can enter their IP addresses here and this will block them from being able to access any part of your website.

SSL/TLS Manager

You should encourage your customers to use an SSL certificate website with their website, even if they aren't running an online shop or processing personal information of any type. Using this section of the cPanel control panel they will be able to generate their own SSL certificates, signing requests for certificates from third-party authorities and keys; all of these are key to creating a professional and secure SSL certificate that will work properly with a web hosting account to provide a high level of protection.

SSH/Shell Access

Advanced web hosting users may require access to their web hosting account through SSH so that they are able to perform more advanced maintenance tasks on their account and put in place specialist configurations to aid their web applications. The cPanel SSH management panel allows you to manage the SSH keys that are assigned to your web hosting account as key authentication is a far more secure method of access than standard password authentication; as they private key needs to be held by the end-user, there is little chance of hackers being able to perform a brute force attack on a server where this method is being used.

Hotlink Protection

Hotlinking occurs when an image that is hosted in your web space is placed on a web page that is hosted under another website, but instead of linking to the image in their own web space the webmaster of the other website has linked directly to the image in your web space. Hotlinking can be an issue because it can vastly drain your bandwidth without any benefit to you and so enabling Hotlink Protection will prevent this from happening.

Leech Protect

If you have used the password protection feature of cPanel and one of your users has handed out their username and password when they weren't meant to then Leech Protect will identify these users and redirect any compromised accounts.

GnuPG Keys

This is a feature that can be used to secure email messages because it adopts the public/private key appraoch, with which the message is encrypted using the public key and the recipient of the message will need to hold the private key in order to decrypt the message when they receive it.

MySQL Databases & MySQL Wizard

MySQL databases are used by web developers when creating dynamic web applications because these websites often rely on a database as somewhere that the content and configuration information that powers them is stored. The benefit of using a database is that a large collection of information can be accessed by any web page or script that forms part of your website, just as long as there is an active database connection. Through cPanel you can create and manage your MySQL databases and their related users, allowing you to manage permissions for security reasons. The MySQL Wizard has been provided so that some of these processes can be simplified for beginners.

Even though cPanel will allow you to manage your databases, a separate application is necessary for the management of the contents of your MySQL databases. PHPMyAdmin is an open-source third-party tool that is supplied with cPanel and designed solely for the management of MySQL database structures so that you can create new tables and modify the columns related to these tables through a web interface; you can also keep tabs on the rows of data that popular these tables.

Remote MySQL

If there are websites hosted on other servers that you would like to have access to the MySQL databases hosted on the current server then you can use this feature to specify the IP addresses of the remote servers that you would like to give access to.
