Change a domain name.

hello,

If I have a linux shared plan and wish to change the domain name -is that possible ? Will I loose files or any emails ?

The domain name will be finalised later so we are thinking of using a temporary domain name at the time we order and later wish to change the domain name when we have finalised the name.

Thank you for registering on our Forums. You can indeed get the domain name changed later. You do not loose any data for the account. Everything else, including the username for the account remains same.

I have a question on this same topic. When you get a domain change is there any downtime caused by the change? I suppose there would have to be some kind of redirection.

If you have already updated the nameservers of the domain name you wish to host on the hosting plan then there won't be a problem and the domain name will be updated, however, you need to make sure that you do not have any kind of applications or content which is domain specific as if this is the case, you will have to update the applications or the content manually in order to make sure that the domain change is smooth.

Has anyone lately had to deal with DNS migrations that just seem to go on and on? I just recently went to swap out a site over to a new sever (not hosted here, maybe that's why, ha) and it seems like the DNS for 80% of my users just will not catch up.

You need to make sure the correct DNS was set for the domain at the registrar side. On server side make sure 'A' entries for the nameservers exist. Also, if the domain is using same nameservers in DNS Zone file on the server.
